The fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to this problem, with a significant amount of textile waste being generated every year. The apparel and textile (A&T) sector in India contributes about 2% to India’s GDP, and employs about 10.5 crore workers.


India is the 6th largest apparel and textile exporter.

7800 kilotonnes of textile waste is accumulated in India annually.

Less than 60% of the textile waste is being recycled efficiently in India.

The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of annual global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.

 

The fashion industry's greenhouse gas emissions will surge more than 50 % by 2030.

India is  one of the largest recipients of global post-consumer textile waste, with millions of tonnes, to the value of more than EUR100m, of discarded textile imported and manually sorted through various hubs.

Government of India
Ministry of Textiles has
requested for a Proposal to hire a consulting agency for Mapping of Textile Waste Value Chain in India in 2023.
